Cerys Traylor reports on an Australian venture that will do more than boost TV ratings.
Student Jessica Letton, 17, is set for the expedition of a lifetime to raise money for children with terminal cancer. Through ‘The Oz Experience’, run by South Wales’ charity The Joshua Foundation, Jessica, from Lewis Girls School, Ystrad Mynach will take part in conservation work from planting trees, to nursing koala bears and fair penguins through Conservation Volunteers Australia. Llanelli cars attacked

Village plea for police
By Charlotte Beer. Residents of the small community of Bryn, near Port Talbot, have produced a petition asking for a police presence in the 2000 strong village. While the area has one of the lowest crime rates in the borough, residents feel they would benefit from a police officer patrolling the streets.
Glass stops play
By Daniel Stone . A local derby was abandoned when fragments of smashed glass bottles were found embedded in the pitch. Kenfig Hill were 1-0 up at home against local rivals Cornelly in the Port Talbot District League when play was stopped six minutes into the second half.

Climate change warning

A leading Welsh politician has warned: “We are fast approaching the tipping point when the effects of climate change will be irreversible and the UK Government needs to act sooner rather than later.” That’s the view of Welsh Liberal Democrat Assembly Member, Jenny Randerson, speaking at a climate change meeting held on a weekend when events took place across the world urging political leaders to act now to prevent the effects of global warming worsening. Student gig from a star-studded college

Funeral For a Friend (Rex Features)
By Matthew Orefice. Students from the course at Bridgend College that gave the world Bullet for My Valentine and Funeral for a Friend have hosted a gig at Sapphire’s club in the town centre. The students performed an array of songs by artists such as Lady GaGa, Michael Jackson, Chuck Berry and Metallica as well as some original material.
Among the fans was Cai Loughran, 18, from Cowbridge Road, Bridgend, who said: “The sound was very good, and there was a fantastic atmosphere. These kids know how to perform!”
The gig was organised by course leader, Paul Jones, as a way of “putting theory into practice”. He teaches the students a wide range of skills, from recording, performance and live sound to musical theatre, drama and musical history. The purpose, as Mr Jones said, is: “To show the students that it’s not all about the rock star lifestyle and [that] there are many different avenues to take in the creative industries”. Sketty school’s Submarine drama
