This little piggy went to Newport…

PIG IN RED SHOES…Newport Museum and Art Gallery, NewportSat 28 Nov-Sat  16 Jan. Review by Helen Lock. This is about more than just clay statues. With the theme  of the figure producing results such as humans with animal heads and men riding tigers, this “mad menagerie of contemporary ceramics” will showcase some of the more experimental aspects of sculpture. Hollywood’s keeping us in the dark

By Donna Critchley. The coats, scarves and gloves are out and the days are getting wetter and darker. With all this gloom in the skies you would think that the film industry would try to cheer people up with light entertainment in the cinemas, right? Wrong! As winter draws in films such as 2012, District 9, The Road, 9 and even Zombieland (pictured above, Rex Features)  focus on the end of the world. Read the rest of this entry »

An evening with Izzard

Review by Jade Kinsey. Eddie Izzard has jumped from comedy to theatre, then to Hollywood and back again. And now he is back - again!  His religious, historical and philosophical ramblings of previous tours are continuing in Stripped despite any West End or Hollywood influences over the past five years. His opening line was “Let’s talk about everything that’s ever happened.” So, once again he talks to us about dinosaurs, Darwin, Noah’s Ark, Latin, bees and the Bible among other random topics. Jimmy Carr out on a limb

JImmy Carr - Rex Features

Review by Jade Kinsey. It’s no surprise that Jimmy Carr didn’t include the war amputee joke in his set of Rapier Wit that caused such a fuss when he told it to a 2,500 strong Manchester crowd.  Just in case you didn’t hear it first time round, here’s another chance: Read the rest of this entry »

Not enough space for the Schnews

Website review by Richard Allen. Those who want to keep up to date with the latest political news via the internet have long tended to visit websites such as The Times Online, The Guardian or BBC News.  One website, though, that separates itself from the rest is Schnews.org.uk. Schnews goes against the grain in its story writing, with an emphasis on social struggles and protests against formal political parties. Read the rest of this entry »

Fleetwood Mac: alive and kicking

Stevie Nicks - Rex Features

Review by Ben Holley. They say that the oldies are the best, and clichéd as that may be, it was certainly true in Birmingham as Fleetwood Mac took to the stage to produce yet another cracking example of why they are still held in such high regard as a live act.

The band, members of which all now over 60, are  enjoying the autumn of their musical careers. However, as guitarist Lindsey Buckingham put it, “without an album to promote, we can just play what we like”. For Mac, this is clearly a formula that works, and one that enables them to bash out classic after classic.

Let’s give the ref a hand

Thierry Henry - Rex Features

By Gareth Huish. Is it now time for FIFA to go digital? November 18 2009 may go down in history as the day football changed forever, when Thierry Henry’s handball in the dying moments of extra time put the spotlight onto the world of football.

Calls are now being made to implement video evidence as part of the rules of the game to make sure the referees get the big decisions right. With football the most covered sport in the entire world and companies such as Sky Sports ploughing fortunes into their pre and post match analysis covering every angle of every incident, can there be any more excuses from the world’s governing bodies as to why video technology is not being used? Enthusiasm un-curbed

Larry David - Rex Features

Review by Christopher Morris

Curb Your Enthusiasm Year: 2000 – present Cast: Larry David, Jeff Garlin, Cheryl Hines, Susie Essman, Richard Lewis.

So, the seventh series of Curb Your Enthusiasm (Thursday, 10:40pm, November, More4) is upon us and what have we leant? Perhaps the most important thing that you need to know is that everything to do with this utter diamond has lost none of its sheen, sparkle and wit in any way shape or form.

Skinny jeans: just say no

Kate Moss - Rex Features

Sophie Clissett on Kate Moss madness.

The ominous, “skinny jean”. The patronising garment which typecasts how you should look in order to wear it. This is, without a doubt, the worst fashion fad I’ve ever had the discomfort to come across. So who do I have to thank for this near-death-suffocatingly-tight experience? Kate Moss.

Kate, the “Get the London look” lass who undoubtedly has looks to die for and a wardrobe to match. What a shame then, that she introduced us to such a garment all those years ago.

The rails of Topshop are adorned with this lady’s designs. Beautiful pretty prints, tailored to perfection… But the skinny jean is lurking. Now I realise that such a model as this is there to provoke discussion in the fashion world. Read the rest of this entry »

Shop till you drop

st davids 2

St Davids 2

By Rowena Wilcox. Scantily-clad models, smoke machines and Hot-Chip blasting through the speakers; no I’m not talking about a fashion show but, the opening of Cardiff’s St Davids 2. After three years, a skyline littered with cranes, dust and the odd builder decked out in his fluorescent gear has ceased for residents in the capital and a much more eye-pleasing shopping centre takes its place.
