Cerys Traylor reports on an Australian venture that will do more than boost TV ratings.

Student Jessica Letton, 17, is set for the expedition of a lifetime to raise money for children with terminal cancer.  Through ‘The Oz Experience’, run by South Wales’ charity The Joshua  Foundation, Jessica, from Lewis Girls School, Ystrad Mynach will take part in  conservation work from planting trees, to nursing koala bears and fair penguins through Conservation Volunteers Australia. Festival is anything but square…

During the summer, while most Brits where hastily packing their wellies into the smallest confinement of their rucksacks, I was doing similar but spending longer locating my passport. Opinion – By Rowena Wilcox. I’m happy to remove my shoes and walk three metres across an extremely grubby floor on tip-toes as they are x-rayed.  I’m happy to wave goodbye to my new (and expensive) handbag as an over- zealous security officer kneads my prized-possession as though it’s a loaf of Hovis brown in order to get it to fit in the tiny tray.

I’m even happy to lose a full-sized bottle of perfume, two lip glosses and a hand cream if it means we can all travel safely. A naked x-ray is another thing entirely.

There be dragons

By Chris Latham. The tiny provincial village of Woolfardisworthy West is the very epitome of Englishness. Resting peacefully in the rolling North Devon countryside, it is renowned for its beautiful coastlines and country walks. In this little haven of tranquillity a visit to the local Gnome Reserve is about as exciting as it gets. For one weekend each summer however, something rather unusual takes place.
